SleepOver - Frequently Asked Questions

General

Why can't I enter a 0 into the MAC address?

Apple's 2.2 firmware update seems to have changed the behaviour of the numeric keypad that was being used for entering the numeric digits into the MAC address fields. The numbers 1-9 worked OK, but the 0 key actually returned the + character instead of the 0 character. SleepOver 1.1.2 works around this interesting behaviour by using a different keyboard type for the MAC address fields.

How do I edit my host information once I have entered it?

On the main screen, tap the blue arrow button next to the host that you want to edit. You should now see the Host Information screen which will display the details you have entered for that host. Tapping the Edit button will put the host into edit mode and then you can tap each field and change its value.

Why can't I wake my wireless desktop computer or laptop?

Does it have a network cable attached? No? That is why it will not wake then. As the requirements in the iTunes App Store state: Target hosts must have wired network connections. This is not a limitation caused by SleepOver, it is a limitation of current technology, it is just not currently possible to wake a wireless computer over the network.

What does the Lookup button do on the Hostname screen?

The Lookup button allows you to test if the iPhone can resolve the entered hostname into an IP address. If the hostname cannot be resolved into an IP address it could be because you have entered the hostname incorrectly or the iPhone cannot contact any DNS servers to perform the lookup.

Does SleepOver support Dynamic DNS?

SleepOver allows you to specify a hostname, which will be used instead of the IP address. Users of Dynamic DNS services should enter their Dynamic DNS hostname.

Why does SleepOver tell me my IP address is being ignored?

SleepOver allows you to specify a hostname and an IP address, but only one of them is actually needed. If you specify a hostname, this will be used instead of the IP address. SleepOver is just letting you know about this. If you have a static public IP address then leave the hostname field empty and enter your IP address, however if you have a dynamic public IP address then it is recommended that you sign-up with a Dynamic DNS service and enter your Dynamic DNS hostname instead.

How do I know if my router will allow wake-over-Internet to work?

At the moment, there is no reliable way to know this until you experiment with your router's settings to see if it will allow the magic packet through from the Internet to your target host. I would like to build up a list of routers which are known to work, which I will display on this website for the benefit of anyone who needs this information. If you manage to get your router configured to allow wake-over-Internet to work reliably then please use the Report Router form to send me the following details:

  • Make
  • Model
  • Firmware version
  • Harware version
  • Notes on how you configured the router

This will help anyone who is thinking of buying a router to use with wake-over-Internet.
